Happily, the more things change in Napa,
the more things stay the same in Napa. And so it goes that as one legendary
winery changes ownership hands, another emerges from the chrysalis to spread
its wings anew.
In September, the Mondavi family will celebrate the renewal
of the Charles Krug Winery–officially unveiling an $8 million restoration
to the two historic national landmark buildings at the winery while also
honoring the patriarch, Peter Mondavi.
Krug is of course part of Wine Country
history. Founded in 1861, it was the Valley’s first winery and played a
integral role in the development of California’s reputation as a
winegrowing region.
The renovation of Krug represents more than a refurbishment
of the 1872 Redwood Cellar and the 1881 Carriage House. It also represents a
rebirth of sorts for Krug, which also recently underwent an extensive
replanting in the vineyards to focus on red Bordeaux varietals. The winery now
also practices entirely organic and sustainable farming techniques, further
showing a desire to remain as relevant as the day it opened.
So it’s good to know that, in many cases, Napa’s
history remains the same by embracing change.
