In his first narrative ballet since 1997, renowned choreographer Mats Ek explores Shakespeare’s four hundred year old tragedy of star-crossed lovers.

In reversing the title, Ek hoped to reveal the truth of the play from a different angle, revealing the fated love of Julia for her Romeo. A master of reinterpreting the great classics into contemporary dance, Mats Ek says “All great stories through time must be taken care of so they remain significant in our time.” Using the music of Tchaikovsky, rather than Prokofiev, Ek’s ballet is a return to the story’s source, an exploration of the conflict of unprotected love versus established violence.
