The third and final film offered this year is Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) with Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur and George Bancroft. Longfellow Deeds, played by Gary Cooper inherits $20,000,000 from a fabulously wealthy patron of the arts. Deeds, who doesn’t feel the need for anything extra in his life is convinced to move to New York. Once he is in New York he meets reporter Babe Bennett played by Jean Arthur and she soon falls in love with the big lug. Ultimately Deeds sets up a foundation to dispense his fortune to the country’s neediest souls. Through a series of events Deed’s lawyer tries to have him declared insane, by the end of the sanity hearing the judge declares “Not only are you sane, but you’re the sanest man who ever walked into this courtroom!”
