The California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco was one of the few institutions in the United States to offer an extensive photography program during the years immediately following WWII. The program was established in 1945 by Ansel Adams and directed and developed by Minor White. It was the first academic department in the country to teach photography as fine art, placing equal emphasis on aesthetic sensitivity and technical expertise. The quality of instruction was unmatched anywhere: teachers included Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, and Lisette Model.


The Golden Decade exhibits work by over 20 artists who emerged from the first ten years of the CSFA program, including the influential photographers Pirkle Jones, Ruth Mandel, Ira Latour, John Upton, David Johnson, and Philip Hyde. The school was renamed the San Francisco Art Institute in 1961 and continues to train and develop extraordinary artists.
